Japan eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi: which is cheaper for 1–4 people?
Solo or two people: eSIMs cost less. Three or four who stay together: one shared pocket Wi-Fi costs less. Totals for 1–4 people over 7 and 14 days, prices checked 16 Oct 2026.
Just choose whether you have a car, how much time you have, who you're traveling with, and what matters most to you. Fuji Samurai suggests an order for visiting Kawaguchiko and the Fuji Five Lakes area, based on official information. Bus stops, routes and opening hours come from official primary sources. Stay-time and walking-difficulty estimates are Fuji Samurai's own guidance for travelers.
Solo or two people: eSIMs cost less — ¥4,350 for one, ¥8,700 for two (7 days, 3 GB a day at full speed each). Three or four who stay together: one shared pocket Wi-Fi costs less — ¥9,240 for the whole group for 7 days (10 GB a day, shared), against ¥13,050 for three eSIMs. Regular prices from the official sites; see 7- and 14-day totals.

Travelling alone? An eSIM is the cheapest option we found (¥4,350 for 7 days, unlimited). Two of you? At regular prices two eSIMs cost less (¥8,700 vs ¥9,240), but if NINJA WiFi’s online discount applies and you stay together, a shared 10 GB/day pocket Wi-Fi can cost less (¥6,468).
3 people who stay together? A shared 10 GB/day pocket Wi-Fi costs less (¥9,240 vs ¥13,050 for 7 days). 4 people? Pocket Wi-Fi either way. If your group splits up, stick with eSIMs.
Phone locked to your carrier, or not eSIM-ready? Pocket Wi-Fi, or free Wi-Fi only.
Cities only, light use? Free Wi-Fi may be enough — but expect gaps while you move.
Cheapest is not always best: the options differ in full-speed data, pickup and return, and whether you can split up. Prices and discounts change — check the provider’s site before you buy.
Total cost for the whole group: one eSIM per person, or one pocket Wi-Fi shared by everyone. The plans give different amounts of full-speed data, so each column says what you get.

Wi-Fi = one 10 GB/day pocket Wi-Fi shared by the group, so it only works while you stay together. *A discount can flip the answer for two people — see the box below. Pocket Wi-Fi
*Pocket Wi-Fi discount: on 16 Oct 2026, NINJA WiFi’s reservation page showed every plan at 30% off (10 GB/day ¥924 instead of ¥1,320; Infinite Unlimited ¥1,386 instead of ¥1,980) when we opened it from the buttons on NINJA’s home page. Opened directly, the same page showed regular prices. NINJA does not state the conditions or an end date, and we could not confirm the price at checkout — so the main figures use regular prices, and the discounted totals are shown in small type.
How we calculated: eSIM = Airalo Japan unlimited, ¥4,350 for 7 days; the 14-day row uses its 15-day plan (¥7,850), because there is no 14-day plan. Airalo’s unlimited plans run at full speed for 3 GB a day by default, then slow to 1 Mbps until the next day. Pocket Wi-Fi = NINJA WiFi: 10 GB/day at ¥1,320 a day, slowing to 128 kbps once the day’s 10 GB is used, or Infinite Unlimited at ¥1,980 a day with no daily cap (speed may be limited at peak times after heavy use). All prices tax included, as shown on each official site on 16 Oct 2026, viewed from Japan; prices shown in other countries may differ. Pocket Wi-Fi totals assume free airport pickup and return; hotel delivery adds ¥550 each way. Optional insurance (from ¥220 a day) is not included.
What changes the answer
Pocket Wi-Fi only works when you are together. A group that splits up often is better off with eSIMs.
A 10 GB/day plan is 10 GB for everyone. Shared by four, that is 2.5 GB each before it slows to 128 kbps. If you stream video, compare the unlimited plan — for three people, at regular prices, it costs more than three eSIMs.
Discounts can flip the result for two people. A pocket Wi-Fi discount, like the 30% off NINJA showed when we checked, makes a shared device cheaper than two eSIMs — but only if you stay together and are happy to collect and return it.
Pocket Wi-Fi has to be collected, charged and returned. If that sounds like a chore, an eSIM avoids it.

Question

Pocket Wi-Fi
Anything to collect or return?
No — installed on your phone, and you can set it up before you fly
Yes. Airport counter pickup and return at no charge, or delivery for a fee (NINJA WiFi)
What happens after the daily allowance?
Airalo unlimited: 1 Mbps for the rest of the day after 3 GB — still fine for maps and messages
NINJA 10 GB/day: 128 kbps after 10 GB — very slow. Infinite Unlimited: no daily cap
Can one connection be shared?
Yes, as a phone hotspot (Airalo sets no device limit), but everyone shares that phone’s 3 GB/day
Yes — that is what it is for. NINJA does not list a maximum number of devices on its plan page
Can the group split up?
Yes — each phone has its own data
Only the people next to the device stay online
Japanese phone number?
Usually not — most travel eSIMs are data only (Airalo)
No — it is a data device
Phone locked to your carrier?
Won’t work
Works — your phone just joins its Wi-Fi
Extra costs to watch
None beyond the plan
Optional insurance and delivery fees; charges if it is lost or damaged
Is an eSIM right for you?
Good fitYour phone is unlocked and supports eSIM · you travel alone or as a pair · you want data from the moment you land · you would rather not carry and charge another device.
Not a good fitYour phone is locked to a carrier or has no eSIM support · you need a Japanese phone number for ordinary calls and texts · several people want to share one connection all day.
Most travel eSIMs are data only. Airalo states that most of its eSIMs do not support ordinary calls or SMS; you call and message through internet apps instead. If you need a local number, check the plan details before you buy.
Check your phone first
iPhone: go to Settings › General › About. If “No SIM Restrictions” appears next to Carrier Lock, the phone is unlocked. iPhone 13 models and later, plus iPhone SE (3rd generation), can keep two eSIMs active at the same time — for example, your home number and a travel eSIM. Earlier eSIM-capable models (iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 12 and SE 2nd generation) use one physical SIM plus one eSIM.
Google Pixel: Pixel 4 and later work with eSIM.
Other Android phones: check your phone maker’s own help pages, or the compatible-device list on the eSIM provider’s site, before you buy. A phone that is locked to a carrier cannot use another carrier’s eSIM or SIM.

Travel SIM cards are sold at airports and electronics stores. Your phone must be unlocked.
Is free Wi-Fi enough?
For some trips, yes — mostly city stays where you plan ahead and only need maps now and then. Free Wi-Fi won’t keep you online while you move between places.
Airports: Japan’s major international airports have free Wi-Fi in their terminals. How you connect differs by airport.
Hotels: most major city hotels offer Wi-Fi; traditional ryokan and small guesthouses may not, so check when you book.
Cafés, fast-food chains and convenience stores: some have free Wi-Fi, but you usually need to sign up, and the signal can be patchy and slow.
Japan. Free Wi-Fi: a Japan Tourism Agency scheme for overseas visitors. At places showing its mark, a simple registration lets you connect.
Mountains and countryside: expect fewer hotspots.

FAQ
Does a travel eSIM give me a Japanese phone number?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs, including most of Airalo’s, are data only. Use internet calling and messaging apps, or check the plan details if you need a number.
Can I keep my home number while using a travel eSIM?
On supported iPhone models, two eSIMs can be active at the same time. For other phones, check the maker’s help pages.
How much is an eSIM for two weeks in Japan?
Airalo’s unlimited Japan plans have no 14-day option; the 15-day plan was ¥7,850 when we checked (16 Oct 2026). Check the current price before you buy.
Is pocket Wi-Fi better for families?
Often, if you stay together. In our example prices, a shared pocket Wi-Fi costs less than four eSIMs for both 7 and 14 days, and a shared 10 GB/day plan costs less than three eSIMs. If the group splits up during the day, eSIMs are more practical.
